Grade Three Rocks!

ELA

We started learning handwriting this week! The first group of letters  are called clockclimbers because of how they are formed. The Grade 3s are doing a great job with this!

We did a Spelling assessment and started the Words Their Way program word sorts. This is a differentiated spelling program. Though the sorts are all different levels, they all have a similar focus. This week we are practicing the sounds and spellings of short and long a

We also started spelling/phonics notebooks so we can learn everything there is to know about spelling! We started with the alphabet, consonants and vowels, and will be looking at digraphs and blends next week.

We read a book called, "My Mouth is a Volcano". We each wrote our ideas for how to share our ideas when we are excited without interrupting or blurting. We illustrated our idea and made a class book!

We also read a tall tale called, "How I spent my Summer Vacation". We discussed exaggerating. Next week will write more about our own summer as we learn how to write a paragraph.

Math

We have finished the first part of our Patterning unit. Students reviewed how to Count On and how to continue an Addition pattern.

We are also practicing our Addition Basic Facts every day and played a new game, Addition War. This is a fun one to play at home with a deck of cards

Social

Introduction to Mapping is our first unit. So far we looked at Early maps, looked at the Parts of a map, and learned the 8 directions. To help us remember we do many hands-on activities and games, for example, drawing maps in sand, playing What Direction?, and creating a large sized compass rose.

Next week, we will look more closely at map symbols and keys, and will be starting a mapping project soon.

Rock Detectives

We asked, "Where do Rocks come from?" and found out rocks are formed in three different ways. Even though there are 1000s of rocks, there are 3 main kinds: igneous (formed from lava), sedimentary (formed in layers with pressure), and metamorphic (rocks that change with heat and pressure). We learned about the Rock Cycle from Bill Nye, the science guy, and discovered that our earth is made of many layers deep in the earth.

We are making a lapbook with all of our learning.

Our favourite part of our rock study is examining rocks! Students have been bringing in the interesting rocks they find for our Rock Talks. We have a collection of really neat rocks at school that we have been looking at! Rock Talks can happen any day, students just need to bring in a rock and tell me they'd like to share it sometime during the week. So far, we have looked at some cool rocks from the NWT and some polished rocks from Nova Scotia. We even saw a Devon Rocks rock!

We will be going on a Rock Walk fieldtrip this week! Keep an eye on your email for the date. A detailed note has been emailed. Please ensure you have filled out the Walking fieldtrip form by Monday! Thanks!

Art

We read the book, The Dot, and had a Dot Day in our classroom. It was neat to see the different dotted clothes everyone found in their closet!

We coloured dots, drew a picture based on a dot, and painted mini-magnetic canvas dots (concentric circles) that we will be putting together to make a collaborative art piece.

PE

This week we played many different games in the gym including Hot Dog tag, Yoshi, Continuous Dodge ball, Chuck the Chicken, and Freeze Tag. We also had a couple gym classes outdoors while the warmer weather is here.
