The First Week of Grade 3

What a great week we've had getting to know each other!

ELA

We started off with one of my favourite back to school books: First Day Jitters. It has a surprise ending! Ask your child what it was. We learned EVERYBODY gets jitters on the first day of school!

We played a few games to get to know our classmates, started our Gr. 3 memory books,  and made a banner telling about ourselves. We strung them together to show we are all unique individuals but all part of the same team, 3A!

We ended the first day with an awesome performance by Garth Prince! Some of us even went onstage and played some instruments.

It was interesting to hear where everybody was this summer. Some went on trips to BC or Saskatchewan, some went camping, and lots of us stayed in Devon in the rain!
We will be writing more about our summer next week.

We also started our first chapter book Read Aloud. It is one of the novels from the Humphrey (hamster) series. It's pretty funny so far! Humphrey makes up class rules at the end of every chapter. We worked together in small groups to come up with our own class rules. Each group presented their ideas to the class. It was neat to see all groups wrote 'Be Kind' as a rule.

MATH

We started our first math unit: Patterns. The first lesson is reviewing Counting On. We played a Catching number game to help us remember that we 'catch' the first number in our hand (make a fist), then lift the thumb to 'count on' and stop and the last number. We did a practice page to find the difference (gap) between two numbers using this Counting On strategy.

We also did a Basic fact assessment that we will repeat midterm and at the end of the year. I've learned this week that this group LOVES math! And they're good. We are starting a math club to challenge our eager math students.

SCIENCE

We started our first science unit: Rocks!

Students shared what they know and what they were wondering about rocks in a KWL chart.

We examined many different kinds of rocks. The students were overheard talking about the rock's colour, if it was bumpy or smooth, heavy or light, or shiny...they are super observant scientists!

We also completed a couple STEM challenges. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We will be doing a lot of STEM challenges this year!

The first challenge was to design and build a name plate for your desk. The name plate had to meet certain criteria and students had limited materials. They did a super job!

The second challenge was called, 'Save Sam'. In this challenge, students had to work with a partner to 'save' a worm (Sam), by getting him to his life-preserver, after his boat capsized. They worked together to come up with a plan, tested it out, and evaluated how well their plan worked and if they need to make any changes. It was very exciting in the end when everyone succeeded in saving Sam!

It was a rare beautiful week outdoors so we took a few extra recess breaks at the park and played Spy tag outside with our gym buddies.

What a full and fabulous first week!
