Twas the week before Christmas...

All Aboard the Polar Express!

We viewed the story book version of the Polar Express and completed a variety of language arts activities with a Polar Express theme. One of our favourite activities was looking up vocabulary words in a Dictionary! We learned how to use the dictionary features and recognized different ways to find the words efficiently by using our alphabetic knowledge. We then used an online dictionary wordsmyth.net as another way to find meanings of vocabulary words. Also this week, students worked on their reading comprehension and wrote about what they would wish for if they received the First Gift of Christmas. Students are watching the film version with the whole school at the PJ movie party!

Math

We completed Lessons 6-10 in our Place Value study. These lessons focused on comparing numbers, identifying greater and less than, and ordering numbers. We will continue with our Place Value unit after Christmas. The next lessons will have us adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers.

Elfcapades

We invited a class to join in on our Elfcapades this week. 1/2D came to draw teachers and write merry messages to give to staff. Thanks 1/2D for helping us spread joy this week!

Marshmallow STEM

This week we did a STEM challenge using marshmallows and tooth picks. The kids did an amazing job building them and had a ton of fun!

Jingle Bell STEM challenge 

Our second STEM challenge this week was making a jingle bell maze from "Polar Express". The students completed this in partners and had a great time seeing how to best design and use their materials to create a maze.
