Winter Fun

Winter Walk

We participated in the Winter Walk Wednesday. The students had a great time getting some exercise walking around Devon.

ELA

Our Guided Reading groups read a fictional story called The Small One. We discovered how being small can have it's advantages. It's important to recognize and accept the traits that make us unique. We explored new vocabulary and read with fluency as our goal. We also made 2 epic milestones. We have read over 500 books this year! Wow, way to go 3A!

Bossy R:

We learned that short vowel sounds are controlled by the r sound in ar, or, er, ir, and ur. We studied ar and or, completed a highlighting activity and read a story with controlled text while hunting for the bossy r combinations.

Sneezy the Snowman and Hot Chocolate pre-writing

We read a fun story about a cold snowman who kept accidentally melting himself. We discussed all the things he did to keep warm, and then brainstormed descriptive words for writing about hot chocolate. We used giant sticky notes to collaboratively come up with sensory words, who, where, and what words that could be used in writing a paragraph. We enjoyed hot chocolate after our winter walk on Wednesday. Much thanks to Jace's mom for volunteering to serve hot chocolate!

Star Student

We learned more about our VIP Ryder this week. He brought a cool drone to share with us for Show and Tell.

Math

We are subtracting 3 digit numbers without regrouping. We learned a few strategies to further our understanding: using base ten blocks, separating the tens and ones using a table and subtracting, and stack and subtract. The most efficient method is to stack and subtract, however the other 2 strategies are helpful in helping us understand what we are doing and will make the regrouping process easier to understand as well.

Science

This week in Science we wrapped up our Australia projects, the students did amazing on their presentations. Next week we will be starting our building unit.

Social Studies

This week in Social Studies we finished up learning about Tunisia. We learned about some of the goods and services they have there. The students were surprised to learn there are around 50 million olive trees there, and they are one of the biggest producers of olive oil in the world. We will be reviewing and doing a show what you know activity next week.
