Pets, Pillars, Peru

ELA

OG

Students were introduced to a Titanic poem to remember long vowel spellings. The phrases from the poem are:

sail away
see the sea, it's icy
night sky
boat was slow
rescue a few

This week's focus was on the spelling of long i. We did a new word sort to practice sorting some of the common spellings of i: short i, long i, i_e, igh, y. We also worked on a word search to further reinforce these spelling patterns. Students completed a Spelling Bee pretest to give us a starting point for the high-frequency word practice.  All the words have been added to Spelling City so students can use this site to practice. (Use the link on the right of the blog.) Writing the words down as they say the letters out loud and then reading the word aloud will also help.

Autobiographies

We chose our second topic and went through the writing process to write a paragraph. Many students chose
My Pet to write about. They are typing their final copy into a Google doc so it is ready for publishing.

Star Student

Math

We started our multiplication unit with a review on odd and even numbers.

Science

This week in science we tested shapes of pillars to see which shape would be the strongest. We also tested paper to see which type of paper could hold the most weight before tearing. It was a lot of fun!

Social Studies

This week in social studies we continued learning about Peru. Some of the things we learned are that they have an elected president, they have 3 different regions, and most of the land is either rainforest or mountains.
