In the classroom:

ELA: The last of the red word wall words will be introduced this week. We will practice all of the red words during Word Work time as well as learn about the word  family _at. Building reading stamina is our focus during Read to Self time. Our goal is to be able to read for 10 uninterrupted minutes. We will learn and apply a new reading strategy this week: Check for understanding. This strategy reminds us that we are not only reading the words but understanding what we are reading about (comprehension). This week we are starting a mini-unit on Bats. We will explore both non-fiction and fiction texts, and Work on Writing projects with a Bat-theme.

Math: We are continuing our Patterning unit. Most of this week's activities involve building, copying, and describing patterns.

Science: We are well into our 5 Senses unit. Last day we played a game called, "What's that Sound'. We listened to, and identified, sounds. After we sorted sounds (loud vs. soft). This week we will learn how animals, namely Bats, use sound (echolocation) to help them 'see'. We will also explore our sense of smell and sight.

Social: We are sharing pictures and objects from groups we belong to, identifying groups in our community, and learned that we can recognize a group in many ways. One way is by clothing. We are designing a Lego person for a group we belong, or would like to belong. These will be displayed in the classroom on our 'Belonging' board.

Art: We are making our pumpkin faces this week. Look for them on display in the hall by the end of the week!

Science: The 'My House All Year' book (green duotang) will be sent home Monday. Students are to draw/colour their tree on the October page. They do not need to write anything; we will do that part at school. Thanks for helping your child with this project. Please return the duotang by Friday. Thanks!
