We are 50 Days Smarter!!
1K celebrated the 50th day of school in 50s style. As well as working on numbers 1-50 we also participated in 50s era activities.
We read a story, Petunia, that was published in 1950. Petunia was a goose that caused some trouble in the barnyard as she was learning about books, wisdom, and reading. Students connected with the barnyard animal's bumps and bruises. They all had a story to share about a time they got an injury. We talked about how our experiences make good writing material. :)
"Now I understand. It was not enough to carry wisdom under my wing. I must put it in my mind and in my heart. And to do that I must learn to read." -Petunia
Writing activities included 'How to Make a Rootbeer Float' where students learned how to write in sequence (First, Next, Last). I think our favourite part was sampling the yummy float! Students also brainstormed what they would like to have 50 of and what they would not like! Each student wrote and illustrated a page for a class book. Then, we took an active break and learned how to hand jive!
We also practiced number recognition and counting by playing a 50s era game (Chutes and Ladders), made records, and had a bubblegum blowing contest. It was a fun day of learning for all!
Did you know blowing bubbles can help us learn to spell?!
Bubblegum Spelling: Pretend to stretch gum from your mouth when spelling words. Stretch out the sounds. eg.) c-a-t
