A Peek at our Art and Writing

Thank you to everyone who sent in milk jugs for our snowmen lanterns! They are displayed in the hallway.

1K students have been busy with a variety of writing activities. We are working on making great sentences! There are many things that make up a great sentence. First we talked about different kinds of sentences. Our exclaiming and question sentences are inspired from the movie Frozen and are displayed with Olaf in the hall. Then we did an exercise using our senses to think up words that describe Christmas. We turned our ideas into a Christmas ornament hanging poem. Next, we practiced putting words into sentences by retelling a story we read starring Pete the Cat. Now we are working on building great sentences by using adjectives to describe, as well as using a who, what, and where in our sentences.

Thank you to all the families who are doing The Elf on the Shelf at home! You have given us some super writing material! The students enjoy sharing what their elf has been up to, we brainstormed some words to describe the elves, and are writing and illustrating a book of Silly Elf Sentences.

When students are writing their sentence we focus on:

1) Using a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence.
2) Using lowercase letters in the rest of the sentence.
3) Using finger spaces between words.
4) Ending with a period.

Next up, we are writing a persuasive piece to convince Santa to hire us as an Elf! Stay tuned!
