This Week:
Monday:
Tuesday: Library Day
Wednesday:
Thursday:
Friday: PD Day, No School
In the Classroom:
ELA: So far we have explored themes of Feelings and Friendship. We have created our first class book: Rockin in our School Shoes, and have made/learned to read a couple mini-readers: My Backpack and Friends. Hope your child was able to spend a few minutes reading those books to you. They are so excited to learn how to read!
We learned about 'Bucketfilling' and are working on a writing craftivity that shows our ideas on how we can be buckerfillers (sharing, helping, kind words, etc.) The students had so many ideas and I'm already seeing their ideas in action around the classroom! We have a great group of kids in 1B!
We are doing a letter/sound review and all students did a reading assessment with our Learning Support teacher. We will be using the data collected to make reading groups for an awesome new reading program we will begin in October. In class, we have reviewed reading and printing letters A-D. Students can access starfall.com by clicking the link. It's a fun way to review/learn letters and sounds at home!
This week students will be introduced to the Daily 5 structure. We will focus first on 'Read to Self' and practice building stamina.
Math: We are doing a Numbers review. We counted fish and made fish bowls while learning how to write numbers in two ways: numbers and words. (S.O.4 Represent and describe numbers to 20, concretely, pictorially and symbolically.) This week students will participate in math centers that reinforce number sense concepts. We will also try out the chromebooks this week. Students can practice counting with this game at home: http://www.abcya.com/counting_fish.htm
Science: Students were introduced to the 4 seasons. We will explore the Autumn season in depth starting this week.
Social: We are learning the names of our classmates and interviewing (asking questions to find out more) the Special Student of the Day. Students are enjoying sharing the Me Bags and we are enjoying learning more about our classmates. Students were asked to bring in a family photo (email if you'd like me to print it at school) to display on our Family board. In Gr. 1 students are introduced to the concept of Belonging. We belong to different groups at school, at home, and in the community. Our Family photo display will celebrate our first experience with Belonging...Belonging to a Family.
Art: Students did adorable Self- Portrait drawings! We will add colour this week and display in the hallway. :)
PE: Students are participating in games and activities that develop locomotor skills. We are gaining an awareness of our body moving through space and practicing moving our bodies in different ways.
Music: Students have music with Mrs. Stanski. Check out her blog: http://rbesmusic.blogspot.ca/
