Happy Valentine's Day, Friend!

ELA

We read this great story about a rat that didn't think he needed any friends. Then a new dog moved into the neighbourhood...

As we read, we built comprehension by talking about the characters and what was happening, and made predictions. The students made connections and shared ideas that came to mind as we read.

February is a month of promoting love and friendship. Don't Need Friends is a story that showed us everyone can use a friend.

Friend Poem with a Friend

We read a poem called Friends. We used word prediction strategy and analyzed the poems structure. We partnered with a friend in the class to brainstorm things you can do with a friend using a web, then used a bracket organizer to add details to our ideas. After a mini-lesson on writing complete sentences, students worked with their partner to write a poem following the pattern in our mentor poem. Students have completed their rough draft in Google docs and we are working on editing and printing them. We can't wait to share them next week!

Bossy R

We continued our study of r-contolled vowels. We looked at different ways the /er/ sound is spelled: er, ir, ur. We learned a few tricks to help us remember when to use which spelling. Finally, we read some connected text and highlighted all the /er/ words.

Math

Subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers with regrouping was our focus this week. I am impressed with the students hard work in math!

Basic fact practice is increasingly important as we get into more complex equations. Practicing basic facts at home is highly recommended. In the photo students are playing a subtraction fact game called Roll and Cover.

Science

This week in Science we began our building unit. The students were put into tribes and their first task was to test arches and squares to determine which is the stronger shape. They had so much fun!

Social Studies

In social studies we reviewed what we know about Tunisia and began finishing up our unit. The students are excited to begin learning about Peru next!

STEM

On Valentine's Day the students were challenged to create a candy dispenser using only toilet paper rolls, tape and aluminum foil. It was a lot of fun. Each pair had a different approach to the task and all the dispensers came out different.
