This week we focused on our class friends. Each day, one student was randomly chosen to be interviewed by the class and to share his/her "Me Bag". We've learned so much about our classmates already! We also are being authors and illustrators of our own class friends book. We write about and draw our classmate and are working hard on adding details to our drawings! Students are very good at evaluating the work of themselves and their peers. We use an ice cream cone analogy.
We also made a mini reader called, "Friends". We used the Eagle Eye strategy to help us (using pictures as clues to help us read unknown words). Students brought these books home. Ask your child to read it to you!
In math, we are working on counting and identifying numbers to 20. We worked in centers this week. Some of the favourites were: Counting Fish, and Connecting the Dots on the Smartboard (abcya.com), and using playdough to build numbers. We also used dominoes, money, and other counters to help us count. We started a class math library and are enjoying reading books that ask us to count. You can play games, read stories, and count things at home (up to 20) forwards and backwards to help your child master these skills.
Thanks to everyone who send back your forms and for sending the yellow Take Home Folder back to school each day. Today a Fieldtrip notice went home and Book orders.
Each day in Grade 1 is a very full day! I hope everyone has a rejuvenating weekend!
