Friday, the class and I took a moment to pat ourselves on the back. Grade 1 is quite the change from Kindergarten and they did a stupendous job settling in! I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the students this past week. There are some very sweet, smart, helpful, and caring children in our class. They worked very hard all week, but we also had some fun too!
Tuesday we listened to many stories including "First Day Jitters" and "Pete the Cat: Rockin in our School Shoes". We decorated a shoe, played a shoe game, and took pictures of our school shoes for a class book we are making. We also sang a Name song to get to know each other's names, made a Back to School Bookbag with Book, and started our Calendar Books. In the afternoon, we were treated to a special performance by Mary Lambert. Click the link to find out more about Mary!
Wednesday we practiced reading our Bookbag book. We started our Math unit "Numbers to 20", and are doing a printing review of Itchy's Alphabet. Students are enjoying watching the Tumblebook stories at lunch, and we also visited a couple other learning websites together on the Smartboard. The links to Starfall and abcya are on the right, and can be accessed from home.
Students had a chance this week to attend Gym class and Music class. We also visited Go Noodle! for some active brain breaks in the classroom. It's a great way to help our busy Grade 1ers get moving for a few minutes so they can focus on learning for just a bit longer. :)
Thursday we read a special story called Chrysanthemum. We learned our words matter. We learned that words can make a person wilt or blossom. We promised each other that we would use kind words in our class. In math, we counted fish. We made fish bowls and learned that numbers can be written in two ways: in numerals and in words.
Friday we celebrated some birthdays. We read stories, learned more about numbers, and even took some extra time outside to enjoy the sunny weather while it's here! The class was given an assignment for over the weekend: Me bags! Starting next week we will be sharing our Me Bags. One person each day will be our Special Person. We will be interviewing each other and completing a Class Friends book. The Special Person will get to share their 'Me bag', pick the Story of the Day, and other special things. I've asked students to bring back their bags Monday so we can get started. Thank you for helping your child find 4 things for his/her bag.
The last thing I'd like to mention is we will be starting center work in both Language Arts and Math. Our class has access to chromebooks and tablets, as well we have a listening center in the classroom. All students require headphones to use these devices for their learning. Thank you to those parents who have already sent in labeled headphones with your child. I do have a couple extra pairs in class, though sharing this kind of item is not ideal; however, if you'd like for your child to use a school set let me know.
The school is undergoing many changes this year. All information will be communicated via the yellow Take Home Folder, this blog, and the school's website and Facebook page. We are also in the process of setting up email groups for email communication. My email is kristen.kaluza@blackgold.ca if you ever have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued patience and support as we get this year of to a successful start!
