In the classroom:

ELA: This month we are beginning our Rainbow Words program. Information about this sight-word program will come home this week, as well as the first 5 words! We have completed the Star Reading Assessment. We are ready to begin Home-Reading! The Books and Beads (home-reading) folder will be sent home Thursday. We are also starting our Daily 5. The Daily 5 is a framework for structuring literacy time. It gives students choice, encourages independence, and helps develop stamina in reading and writing activities. The first choice is 'Read to Self' which is the foundation of all the other components. This week we will see what Read to Self looks like and have a chance to practice. We will learn the 3 Ways to Read a Book. (1. Read the Pictures, 2. Read the Words, 3. Retell the Story.) We will work on building Stamina. This week we will also be reading a special seasonal story called, "The Fox and the Falling Leaves". Students will be doing a craftivity based on this book. Look for our foxes and leaves displayed in the hall later this week!

Math: We are exploring 10-frames and how they can help us build and recognize numbers.  We will be playing a game called, "Fast Eyes" using 10-frames. We will look at dots in 10-frames. Our goal is to know how many dots there are without having to count them. Playing dice and board games at home will help your child build numeracy skills. At first, counting the dots on the dice and counting spaces moved on a game board reinforces the concept of  "one to one correspondence". With frequent play and practice, the need to count the dots on the dice diminishes as number sense builds. Soon they'll just know! Snakes and Ladders is a great example.  Have some fun with this! And yes, I did just say to play Snakes and Ladders for math homework!  :)

Science: We are exploring Seasonal Change this week. Thank you for helping your child with their drawing, and getting the duotang back to school. It was neat to see everyone's trees! They all did a great job! We are going to discuss what they noticed and write a sentence about our tree. This week, we will also study Canadian Geese. And finally, make some art with the leaves we collected on our Fall Walk!

Social: We are continuing learning about our classmates through our Special Student activities and making a Grade 1 Friends book. We are sure enjoying the "Me bags" show and tell time!

On Friday, our Grade Three Buddies had a surprise for us! They made us Rainbow Loom Bracelets and then read with us! Thanks Grade Threes, Mrs. Tewitz, and Mrs. Forchuk! We love our Buddy time!
