ELA: How to Catch a Leprechaun project: Students are presenting their trap and creating an interactive folder to share their Trap design and fun facts about Leprechauns. We will practice our grade 1 spelling words this week and get the final four pink words to add to our word rings. Students are putting the final page on their Penguin Research Books.

CALDECOTT2013ELast week, we read a Penguin story called One Cool Friend about a boy who takes home a penguin from an aquarium fieldtrip.  In the middle of the story he turns up the air conditioning and makes the penguin a skating rink in his room, lets him swim in the tub, and feeds his penguin friend anchovy pizza and icecream!  He is a bit worried his father may not approve of his new pet... until the end when he discovers his dad has a quirky pet of his own! Ask your child what pet his dad has. :)

We are working on writing our own work of fiction called My Penguin Friend. Students have completed a prewriting activity to help them plan a beginning, middle, and end for their story. This week they will write the story including how they ended up with a Penguin for a pet, 3 things they did with the penguin (details!), and finally how the story ended. Did you get to keep the penguin? Did you take the penguin to the zoo? Did you help the penguin get back to the South Pole? Students already have some great ideas for their story! They will be ready to share them with you at the SLC's on March 25th. :)

Math:  Addition and Subtraction practice through centers and games. We are learning a new game this week. Your child will teach it to you at the SLC's!

Social: We are creating a map flip book. We are learning where we are on the map! We drew ourselves, our school, our neighbourhood, and town. Finally we will add our province, country and world. Students were asked what street they live on. Ask your child if they know their address.

ELA/Science/Art: Penguin Diaramas! Students will do research on one type of penguin, write a report, and create a model of the penguin and it's environment.

Art: We did watercolour paintings and fingerprint penguins. They will be on display soon!
