In the Classroom:

ELA: Penguins. Pink Words. Daily 5.

We are making several books based on our Penguin study. We have completed the first book 'Waddling Words' which is a vocabulary book. Expanding Vocabulary is part of our Daily 5 CAFE menu. We are starting to pay attention to juicy/interesting words as we read, learning how to find out what new words mean, and including interesting words in our writing. We are currently working on a Penguin mini-fact book before we start into our main Research book. We are also reading some fiction books that have Penguins as the main character. We will be writing some Silly Penguin Sentences during our writing time.

Students will be assessed on the Blue words this week. Please assist your child in practicing the Rainbow words at home.

Math: Students have done very well with Subtraction! So far we have used counters, pictures, and the crossing out strategy. This week we will use a number line to help us subtract as well as work on problem solving.

Science: Now that we are at the end of our Creating Colour unit, we will focus on the Needs of Animals with our Penguin study.

Social: New unit! Geography! Students will learn to distinguish geographic features in their own community from other communities by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions for inquiry:

• What are some familiar landmarks and places in my community?
• Why are these landmarks and places significant features of the community?
• What are some differences between rural and urban communities?
• Where is my community on a map or on a globe?
