ELA: September in Language Arts is a review of upper and lower case letters and their sounds. Each student's name will be the first words on our word wall. Phonics concepts will be incorporated into our Student of the Day lessons. The interview answers are recorded as sentences for the class to read. We will practice reading words we know and practice writing names, colour and number words in a book about our Grade One Friends that we will also illustrate. By the end of the month, students will be very familiar with their classmate's names, alphabet letters/sounds, and the basic concepts of sentence creation.
In September students are introduced to the 'Read To Self' portion of the Daily 5. Students will learn how to pick 'Right Fit' books and work on building reading stamina.
Every month students will read a couple poems in their Poetry book. Students look for, and highlight, words that they know in the poems.
Finally, we have a couple focus books each month with themes and activities. September mentor books include:
Math: We will review numbers to 10 and begin our first unit 'Numbers 1 to 20'. Students will recognize and represent numbers (numerals and words), count, subitize, and more. Activities will be a combination of mini-lessons, hands-on activities, and math journaling. Technology is utilized to support our learning. We will visit 'abcya.com' this week.
Science: Seasonal Changes fall
Social Studies: Grade One is all about Citizenship: Belonging and Connecting at Home, School, and Community. In September we recognize that we are unique individuals that are connected to each other. We belong to our families, our school, and groups in the community. We explore this concept in depth in September. Last week, we did an exercise that showed how we are connected by our likes and interests. We discovered we have lots in common! Next up, we will develop questioning skills while learning more about our classmates through our Special Person presentations. Students will be asked to bring in a photo of their family for a display that honours the connection we have to our families.
Thank you for your support in all our learning activities. If you have any questions about anything we are studying, feel free to ask/email.
