In the Classroom

ELA

We are starting a Penguin theme unit that includes both a non-fiction research project as well as reading and writing fictional stories about penguins. We kicked off our Penguin study with a visit from a live African penguin, made Penguin valentines bags, and learned the first part of research: asking questions!

Other Language activities this week include: 5 blue words, reading groups, daily 5.

I was super proud of all the grade ones who participated in the spelling bee. 50 words! They did amazing writing their first big test.

Math

Hurray for the 100th Day of School! Students were given a mission to help Zero the Hero defeat the evil Dr. Double Digit. We completed several challenges, completed our mission, and moved on to triple digit numbers!

We are continuing with our Addition unit this week. Last week, we used dinosaurs and dominoes to help us make addition equations. This week, we will learn about adding doubles and explore different strategies for solving addition problems.

Science

We are nearing the end of our Colour Unit. Last week we did a Mystery Colour experiment and learned about Transparent vs. Opaque. We will do more Colour experiments this week.

PE

Skating Week is over. We thoroughly enjoyed our skating time. How amazing is it that we have a rink right beside our school yard?! Thanks again to all the parents who came out to assist with skate tying, and skate with us.

Music

Friday we had our own very special Garth concert... African drumming!
