ELA
In September we review letters and their sounds. This year we are using both the Animated Literacy and Words Their Way programs. The student's names are the first words on our words wall. We will be interviewing each other and recording the answers, introducing phonics concepts as we go. We will read basic sight words and write class names, colours, and numbers in a book about Our Grade Ones Friends. By the month's end, students will be very familiar with their classmates and basic sentence creation.
In September students are introduced to the Daily 5. We start with 'Read to Self'. Students learn about the 3 ways to read a book, how to pick 'Right Fit' books, and work on building Reading Stamina.
Our mentor books for the month include:
- First Day Jitters
- You're Finally Here
- Chysanthemum
- Pete the Cat Rockin in our School Shoes
- Have you Filled a Bucket today?
- Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen
- The Dot
- Fletcher and the Falling Leaves
Students will practice printing and are introduced to chromebook technology.
Math
We review Numbers 1-10 and begin our first unit, Numbers 1-20. Students will recognize and represent numbers (numerals and words), count, subitize, and more. Math activities will be a combination of mini-lessons, hands-on activities, and math journaling. Technology is used to support our learning. This month we will check out abcya.com.
Science
Seasonal Change is our first unit, specifically Autumn. We study Seasonal Change all year with each changing season. We explore the seasons through classroom activities as well as during a series of seasonal walks. Students will connect to nature as they use their 5 senses in the natural environment. The first walk is soon! Info will go home this week.
Social
Grade One is all about Citizenship: Belonging and Connecting at Home, School, and Community. In September we recognize we are unique individuals connected to each other. We belong to families, our school, and groups in the community. The Me Bag activity is our first Social activity.
Thank you for your support of our Learning! If you have any questions regarding the curriculum, please ask or email.
