November Curriculum Update

ELA

Students will be introduced to the Daily 5 components: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listening to Reading. We will begin rotations by the end of November. This structure allows the students to gain literacy independence while continuing to build stamina. Students are currently able to read silently and continuously for 9 mins. Our goal for November is 10 mins. In addition, a Work with Teacher component will be added where students will work individually or in small groups on Guided Reading activities.

Literacy concepts we are working on in November include:

• recognizing stories have a beginning, middle and an end
• sequencing and retelling stories
• an introduction to story elements (character, setting, problem, solution)
• non-fiction reading and writing
• sentence writing: using a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, lowercase letter within words, finger spaces between words, and periods at the end

Bats - We will do a mini-unit on bats. This is a cross-curricular unit with science. Students will read and write about bats while learning about this unique animal. It will include non-fiction books as well as a fictional story, Stellaluna.

Math

A return to our Numbers unit... Part 2 includes: introduction to the 'Counting on' strategy, skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, counting forwards and backwards to 20, identifying 'teen' number words, and numbers up to 50.

Science

Continue with the 5 Senses. And begin the 'Needs of Plant and Animals' unit with our Bats study.

Social

Belonging in Our Community is the focus this month. Students will explore the following questions while learning more about the community we live in (Devon):

• In what ways do people cooperate in order to live together peacefully?
• How do groups make decisions?
  
  

Students will participate in a Show and Share activity while we learn about Groups in our Community.
