We were so excited this week to surpass our Reading Stamina goal. Not only did we read for 10 uninterrupted minutes, we read for over 13! Way to go Grade Ones!
Students were introduced to 5 orange words. This week they will be given 5 more to practice at school and at home. The goal of sight words is to read them automatically, saving students mental energy for more difficult reading tasks. If your child can say the word in 1 sec, they know that word. If it takes 3 secs, keep practicing that word daily. If it takes longer than 3 secs, tell the child the word and keep practicing daily. Some children learn better by doing. Words can be drawn in a plate of sand or salt, built with play dough or letter tiles. Make sets of flashcards with words and play Go Fish. If you would like more ideas on how to practice sight words at home, let me know!
This Week we will start our Daily 5 centres. We begin with 4 centres: Read to Self, Word Work, Listen to Reading, Meet with Teacher.
Students enjoyed the Munsch-O-Rama field trip. We saw 5 funny stories acted out on the stage. Thanks so much to our volunteers for coming with us!
