WELCOME MS. ZOERB!
We were excited to meet our new teacher as we were heading out for our Rock Walk! Mrs. Kaluza spent the day with her on Friday. She learned that Ms. Zoerb has degrees in English and History, as well as Education. A cool fact about Ms. Zoerb...she coaches a hockey team! Ms. Zoerb will be teaching alongside Mrs. Kaluza all next week.

ELA
Focus this week was the spelling of the long a sound (a, a-e, ai, ay, ei, ea), word sorts, handwriting, and writing a paragraph (how I spent my summer vacation). We are working on building our reading stamina. This week we reached just over 17 mins of uninterrupted focused reading time.
The students are really enjoying our class read aloud, School Days with Humphrey.
Our VIP (Student of the Week project) will start this coming week! We have so many special things planned for our first VIP!
Math
This week we continued our pattern unit by reviewing counting backwards and continuing patterns using subtraction. As well, we are practicing addition basic facts and the kids are getting very fast! We played a new game called Tens Go Fish. You can play it at home for making tens math fun.

Mapping
We used our Compass Rose and Compasses for orienteering in the school yard this week. Students are becoming very familiar with the 8 directions. We had a discussion about Geocaching. There are caches hidden near Devon! If this is something that interests your family, check it out here:

Rock Walk
The highlight of the week was our first fieldtrip! It was a gorgeous day for a walk down to the river valley. We picniced in Voyager Park before exploring the shores of the river for rocks. Each student collected 2 rocks for testing and 1 larger rock for a Pet Rock project. Prior to our Rock Walk students became familiar with the 8 properties of rocks (colour streak, light, feel, smell, shape, hardness, magnetism, lustre). We will be classifying our rocks according to the 8 properties this week.
Rock Talks continue. These talks are awesome for sharing interesting rocks as well as practicing very important public speaking skills! This week our presenters used our class sound system. They sounded very professional.
Coming up!
