I am Thankful...

Literacy

Thanksgiving was our theme this week. We read a book called Turkey Trouble.

It was a funny story about a Turkey who tried different disguises in order to not get eaten for Thanksgiving dinner. He tried many animal costumes but in the end settled on a disguise that did the trick! Ask your child about the story ending. We reviewed story elements and then wrote our own idea for a Turkey disguise. 3A had some pretty clever ideas!

We also read a book called The Thankful Book.

Students wrote one thing they were Thankful for for our class display.
We started writing a Thankful book where we expand into more detail and use categories to organize our ideas. It becomes a cute book students will be able to take home.

This week we worked on expanding our Vocabulary with Amazing Words. Each week students will get a new list of words that will be introduced in class and discussed. Students will bring home the word list to practice reading and I will check in with them on Friday. I was super impressed with how well the class did in reading our first group of words! If your child is unable to read the words independently, remember it is a Vocabulary exercise. It is okay if you read the words and discuss with your child what the words mean. The purpose is to learn new words and expand vocabulary.  Being able to read them independently is a wonderful bonus!

This week in our OG phonics study, we studied the FLOSS rule.

We learned the rule, highlighted some examples, and then played the Floss Rule game with a partner.

We started a new group of handwriting letters called Kite Strings. So far we have practiced i and u.

We are still working on building our reading stamina. The students can read collectively for approx 15 mins.

This week we enjoyed getting to know our VIP Sophiee!

She shared with us a neat video called diy lifehacker. It was interesting and some of the hacks were quite clever! We only watched 5 mins but there is more here:

Our next Star Student will be in November.

Numeracy

Basic fact practice and solving word problems with addition and subtraction patterns was our focus this week. We also did a subtraction review as it seems a bit trickier for the students than addition.

#inktober

3A is participating in Inktober. It was started by an artist who wanted to improve his own drawing skills. It since became an event. The artist lists a drawing prompt for each day in the month of October and we participate by drawing for 5 minutes a day.

Tech Time

This week on our chromebooks we continued to work on Typing Club. Typing Club login information was home this week as well. Mrs. Kloschinsky told the class about how she learned to type and welcomed them to challenge her to see who can type faster anytime. We also spent some time on abcya playing some learning games.

Science

In science this week we named, measured and adopted our pet rock. We also learned about the different layers of soil and what makes up those layers. The students learned that soil is different in different places but is made up of some combination of the same particles. We also looked at some oceanic rocks, the students were curious about chalk rock and learned that it is used to make a variety of things including antacids which makes your tummy feel better!

Social

We are almost finished on our big mapping project. This week we worked on colouring our good copies. The students also came up with questions their friends can answer based off their map. We also learned about the Solar System! The students enjoyed learning about which planet was the biggest and comparing the planets. It was a very fun class!

Art

We made paper fan turkeys in art this week for Thanksgiving. The students had a blast!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
