October is already bursting with fun-filled learning experiences!

Orange Shirt Day

We read a story called Stolen Words to learn more about the meaning behind Orange Shirt Day.

Students designed their own orange shirts and then we had an Elder visit. He talked to us about orange shirt day, his family, and brought a whole bunch of furs from all kinds of animals used to make clothing and blankets. It was very interesting!

ELA

Students completed the Literacy portion of the SLAs this week. It included a reading part that we completed on the chromebooks and a written part where students wrote about what they would do if they were teacher for a day. The bonus of the SLAs is that the students have gained comfort with the logging in process, use of Google classroom, and accessing the learning links connected to our class blog. These links are accessible from home too!

Typing Club

Students began learning to type on Typing Club this week. In the coming weeks the students will be working through different lessons to help improve their typing skills. They are really enjoying learning how to type faster and getting to see how many stars they can get in each lesson!

STAR STUDENT

Teagan was our Star Student this week. We were so happy she brought her 2 adorable dogs for Show and Tell!

Teagan shared a heart-warming video with us. Check it out here

We will have one more VIP next week and then will continue in November after Thanksgiving and Halloween.

Math

We played a new game called, 'Climb to the Top'. In a race to the top against a partner, students practiced adding sums less than 10, using cards 3,4,5,6s, counters, and a gameboard. If you'd like to play this game at home, let me know and I will send home the game kit for you to try!

We completed Patterning using Subtraction and started Patterning review using both addition and subtraction.

We continue to practice our basic facts daily.

Science

We learned the different rock types by using Starburst candies to create our version of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, we cut, squished and heated the candies in our hands. In order to make igneous rocks the students learned we would have to melt the candies in a microwave and let them cool and harden. We talked about the differences between translucent, transparent and opaque and learned examples of what the differences are. We also made our own pet rocks!

Social

In social studies this week we began working on our big mapping project! The students are creating a map of their own imaginary place, they are being very creative and working so hard to ensure their final map looks amazing!
