Squirrel's New Year's Resolution
To begin the new year (and new decade!), we read a story about a squirrel and his animals friends who made resolutions. We learned a resolution is a promise you make to yourself. Squirrel had a hard time thinking of a resolution at first but after visiting all his friends and helping them with their resolutions, he realized he had one after all! We worked on reading comprehension by matching the animals to their resolutions after reading and then wrote our own resolution.
The Snow Globe Family
It was the perfect week to read this story! As soon as we finished, we looked out the window and saw that it looked like we were in a snow globe! This week we focused on Reading Comprehension activities. We discussed story elements, the problem and solution, and outlined a story map. We drew some of the activities the snow family liked to do in the snow and what the family looked like when the snow globe was shaken. Next week, we will focus on writing a narrative based on this book.
Star Student
This week we learned more about Trysten. He shared a hockey highlights video with us and brought his dog, Diesel, for Show and Tell. Thank you to Trysten's mom for bringing him. Diesel loves kids and was very friendly.
OG Spelling
This week students learned about the beginning sound /r/ spelled wr. We also did a Words Their Way word sort on wr and other silent letter beginnings (gn and kn).
Handwriting
We finished all the Loop Letters and will be starting our next group of letters, Hills and Valleys, next week.
Math
Our Place Value unit has led us right into 2 and 3 digit adding and subtracting! Regrouping is a bit tricky, but using the Base-Ten blocks and drawing models of these blocks have been helpful strategies.
Social Studies
This week in social we started learning about Tunisia, we learned that the capital city is Tunis. We also learned about the flag and coat of arms and the importance of each of the symbols shown on them. The students practiced locating Tunisia in an atlas and learned it is on the continent of Africa.
Genius Hour
The students started a Genius Hour project this week! They each get to pick a topic and three questions they want to find answers for about their topic. Once they are finished they get to present it to the class. They are having so much fun deciding what they are most interested in learning about!
Hoop Dancing
The students had the incredible opportunity of watching Dallas Arcand perform Hoop Dancing this week. They all thought it was awesome! They even tried some hoop dancing of their own in Phys. Ed after!
